Bill,

I am in Canada for a couple of weeks at our cottage. To fully understand how the London Bombings play in Europe - you need only look at the left in Canada:

Letter to the Editor in the Toronto Star yesterday:

Bring troops back from Afghanistan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
London bombings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Almost every article, editorial or letter I have read concerning the London bombings and the impact on Canada has said the same thing. The terrorists are coming here and we should either boost security measures to prevent the attack and/or be prepared for the aftermath. Nowhere have I read that we should consider enacting political measures that would cause the terrorists to not want to bomb us.

Osama bin Laden has said, "if you bomb our cities we will bomb yours." He also named Canada in a list of targets, all of which have been attacked except Canada. Since all the other countries were successfully attacked, then it seems probable that Canada will also be bombed, unless we do something the other countries did not do prior to the attacks.

Why not stop bombing people in other countries? Why not bring Canadian troops back from Afghanistan and leave the Americans to carry out their campaign of world domination alone? If Canada is attacked tomorrow I will not blame the terrorists for the deaths of Canadians, I will blame Paul Martin.

This is pretty representative of the left up here, but do not despair - they do not represent all of Canada.

Its funny because my youngest son and I were watching the Return of the King on DVD just before I read the paper. I was struck by the scene in Fangorn Forest where the Ents advised Merry and Pippin to return to the Shire. It finally dawns on the Hobbits that the flames of war will reach the Shire and there is no safe haven...

Kind of like that Dutch filmaker who says 'surely we can discuss this?' just before being murdered in probably the most tolerant nation on Earth.

John
