An honest appraisal in a WaPo editorial

You call that crap honest?

Not me.

"[Rove's] misleading public accounting"

I thought at first that they were talking about Wilson.

Rove is under absoutely no obligation to the public to account for a damned thing. His boss does, but he doesn't. And he has wisely pretty much kept his mouth shut. The MSM is for the most part imagining what he said or did and suggesting it is misleading. The WaPo adopts this utterly dishonest approach in this piece, though I admit I smell the odor of backtracking now that Rove's legal prospects are becoming clearer and more favorable.

My take: Rove knows he's a lightning rod so he was quiet while he was at all times acutely aware that the legal case against was weak. Why should he dignify the Dems attempts to slime him by saying word one about the issue? He's a very shrewd guy, very cunning, and this is not his first rodeo. Sounds like he may have nicely trapped the Dems. Again.

This gives the lie to White House denials that Mr. Rove was involved in the leak.

Huh?

We are now finding out that Novak leaked to Rove, not the other way around.

At the same time, Mr. Rove and other administration officials had a legitimate interest in rebutting Mr. Wilson's inflated claims -- including the notion that he had been dispatched to Niger at Mr. Cheney's behest.

Well, duh. The first time I've seen the WaPo or other MSM newspaper admit such a thing. Wilson thought that he could get away with sliming Rove and the White House on the cheap, and get a leg up politically should Kerry have won. From all appearances, Rove seems to have simply made an attempt to set the record straight with Cooper after Novak leaked to him.

Who leaked to Novak? IMO there are two possibilities: Scooter Libbey or Novak already knew.
