Zambia's Copper Production Rose 6.2 Percent in Second Quarter 2005-07-15 12:05 (New York)
By Nasreen Seria and Anthony Mukwita July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Zambia's copper production rose 6.2 percent in the second quarter after some mines completed repairs on smelters and replaced old equipment, the central bank said. Copper output rose to 96,292 metric tons, from 90,638 tons in the first quarter, central bank Governor Caleb Fundanga said in a quarterly briefing to reporters today, a copy of which was e- mailed to Bloomberg. Zambia, Africa's biggest copper producer, earned $299.3 million from exports of the metal in the second quarter, up from $264.3 million in the previous quarter, Fundanga said. Cobalt production dropped 46 percent to 398.85 tons, earning the country $12.7 million. Corn stocks held by the country's millers rose 3.4 percent to 280,080 tons, the central bank said.
