on grounds of national interest sounds misinformed to me.

Trends seem on the path for China and the U.S. to divide the remaining resources and then have a big war. Witness recent inflamatory remarks by a Chinese general. That is not to say that stopping this sale will stop a future nuclear exchange, but it is an indicator that the trend continues.
