Its likely that your aging 36 year old automobile performs best with a higher octane gasoline than is currently available.

Acetone increases the octane rating of the gasoline, although this may not be the safest way to do so.

Gasoline with excessive octane used in modern auto engines can produce overheating, dirt deposits, and damage to the emissions system.

Gasolines sold today are formulated both for geographic region and also for the most prevalent type of fuel injected automobile. For this reason, octane ratings of gasoline are not as high today as they were decades ago.

Some older cars which were designed for leaded gasoline also require the addition of a lead-like additive to prevent excessive wear.
