It is essentially a civil war within a rival civilization in which the most primitive elements are seeking to gain the upper hand.

Yes, in essence this certainly is a civil war within the Islamic world. The extremists, followers of Sayyid Qutb, whose - to use Qutb's term - "vanguard" - is represented by the likes of Al Qaeda -- are trying to take control of the Muslim world.

They are the people who are fighting against us in Iraq. Without the international Jihadis, the native Iraqi "insurgency" would quickly fold.

As things stand, I'd have to say that they are a darn rugged bunch of fighters. Over 170K of American and coalition forces - along with 100's of thousands of Iraqi security - have a pretty hard time containing them. If they end up with even only an appearance of victory... their movement may quickly gain momentum.

If they are not stopped now, who can stop them later?
