During the years when the Constitution was being framed, nearly all the citizens were Christians. In spite of that fact, the Constitution framers had the vision and the forethought that mixing religion with politics would not augur well for a nation. They had been through a horrible experience of religious persecution causing them to flee to the US. And they realized that it should "Never again..." hence they proceeded to enshrine that value in the Constitution.

Now the US is comprised of multitude of religions. And for those who say that the appointment to a public office should be based on how good a "Christian" a person is, is utterly foolish.

Terrorism can be effectively dealt with if we do not play the same game of "religion" that the Muslim fundamentalist have engaged in.

IMHO.
