A few more thoughts on moving to one those "hot" rural areas when one reaches a certain stage in life.

The one mentioned in Georgia is attracting the mega-rich of that region, and the homes and lots look the part. We came across many huge estate-sized homes, one in particular that we had to ask a friend about, because it was so amazing. Friend said it was owned by the founder of a very very well-known chain of those 24-hour convenience stores that one sees in towns across America.

I already have a bigger lot and home than I want to take care of the rest of my life. I don't want to pay a grounds-keeper and a housekeeper, drive miles to a store or medical facilities, etc. and move to something even bigger and presumably "better".

Perhaps my experience reflects why it is such a mistake for many people to buy lots or homes in faraway places in advance of retirement, thinking that is where they'd like to spend the rest of their lives. It's not always the best place to settle down, and they can change their minds later, but at great cost.
