Of course gsm is not needed if you are convinced the mules will make it to the very right place on the very right time. because if so a preset timer would be sufficient.

GSM activation has become very popular recently though. Well described on the bombing threads.



There is the anomaly of the bomb on the bus to consider.
It appears that that bomb went off as soon as the bomber fiddled with it. I suspect they were all set to go off that way. The handler probably told them to arm the timers at a pre-set time so they would go off together, but didn't tell them that it would go off instantly. The mules were the weakest link and they did not want them captured and interrogated.

Still, it would really mess up recruitment later.
That really throws a cloud over who was the handler.
