I served in Botswana 1988-89 as a US diplomat, JHB 1989-1991, married a South African, came back to visit several times, served in Mauritius 1995-1998 and now live in Maseru since 2004 in my new occupation. I know my way around the area pretty well, plus some parts of East Africa and the Indian Ocean.

I really hope that SA doesn't vanish into the mire - what happens to Zuma will tell us a lot about that, I suspect. As for capitalism, SA is a much more capitalist environment than it was 15 years ago, with a retail explosion that boggles the mind. Edcon's earnings were gangbusters. If that continues, the logic of capitalism and self-interest may surprise you.

And when you talk about savings, the stokvel system was brilliant. I suppose they have been replaced by formal bank accounts now. Pity, they sounded like fun.

The verdict on the future is still out. We shall see.
