Hi Suma! I don't know anything about mange, but I do know that if you want to save that dog's life, you will have to deal with her without involving Animal Control, as I believe you have yourself figured out.

At the same time, of course you don't want to endanger the safety of your own pets by possibly exposing them to any diseases.

Are you sure the dog won't voluntarily walk into an open crate if there is a big juicy plate of hamburger inside? That way you could close the crate and take her to the vet. The alternative is to look in the phone book and find a vet who will come to your house to evaluate her. If she is basically healthy and treatable, and you don't fall totally in love with her and decide to keep her, the best thing might be to take care of her until she has regained trust and then find a good home for her yourself. Individuals usually do a better job of this than agencies do, especially in states where a lot of animals are euthanized every year, and I believe yours is one of those.

Our family fostered a young female dog that had been seriously abused. She would cower in the corner, in fact, most of the time. It took about a month, but she did learn to trust us because we were consistent and loving towards her, as were our own dogs, who were young, accepting and wanting to play. Dogs basically want to interact with humans, and it is hard for me to imagine that she wouldn't eventually learn to trust you.

I'm really sorry that we couldn't keep the dog we fostered. We named her Snickers (she was a really cute mostly rottweiler mix), and I was really sad when it was time to give her up for adoption because I loved her. Unfortunately her adoptive people did not listen at all to the instructions they were given to keep her tightly leashed on the way home, and then keep her mostly inside until she adjusted. She must have been very frightened, because she escaped from them as they got her out of the car at their house, and even though a huge team of people from the Humane Society, as well as our family, looked for her for days, she was never seen again.

Please let me know what happens!
