Gee, it sounds like you live in the San Juan Islands, or someplace equally beautiful and remote. I used to live on an island near Seattle accessible only by ferry, and I think it is the most peaceful lifestyle. I envy you! I don't know where the $40 ferry ride takes you, but I bet that at the end of it there is free range meat available somehow. You certainly could buy in quantity and freeze it. Or if the area you live in has small farms and ranches, often you can buy organic free-range meat (and eggs) directly. You could also ask your local grocer to carry frozen free range chickens at least; you cannot assume you are the only person where you live who might be interested in buying these. But it is hard to imagine that on a serious stocking-up trek into town, you could not find a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or some natural grocer offering free range meat. The issue is whether you would be motivated to go a little out of your way to procure some.
