Is Bird Flu On Topic for the FADG?

Bird flu suspected in 3 deaths in Indonesia

Indonesian health officials say they believe three members of one family, living on the outskirts of Jakarta, may have died from bird flu.

A one-year-old girl died last Saturday, her 38-year-old father died in hospital on Wednesday and a second daughter, 8, died on Thursday. They all died from a critical form of pneumonia.

Initially, the Indonesian Health Department insisted that tests proved negative for the H5N1 bird flu virus. But after further testing, Health Minister Siti Fadillah Supari announced it is now suspected the three did die from avian influenza.

The three have no history of direct contact with poultry, which raises concerns that if the suspicion of bird flu proves correct, there is a chance the virus was transmitted between humans.

Since late 2003, outbreaks of bird flu have killed more than 50 people in Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.

Millions of chickens have also been culled across Asia, in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
