Interesting comment by the ACLU, quoted in the Washington Post. Concerning documents showing that the FBI "monitored Web sites calling for protests against the 2004 political conventions in New York and Boston on behalf of the bureau's counterterrorism unit" the Post reports that "The American Civil Liberties Union pointed to the documents as evidence that the Bush administration has reacted to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States by blurring the distinction between terrorism and political protest."

What rock are they hiding under? Terrorist attacks ARE political protest. What terrorist attacks in the past ten years haven't been political protests?

The concept that political protest is necessarily peaceful has been shattered not only by terrorist attacks but by political protests in Seattle, Spain, now Scotland, among others. Terrorists love big, confusing crowds; they have a better chance of slipping in undetected and doing maximum damage.

It would be nice if the ACLU would consider the safety of Americans as at least a minor priority of their political viewpoint.
