FRANKFURT, July 17 (Reuters) - German luxury car maker BMW (BMWG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) increased its car sales in China by around 12 percent to 7,798 vehicles in the second quarter, Automobilwoche reported on Sunday, quoting the carmaker's head of Chinese operations.

The second quarter results comes after first-quarter sales fell 6.6 percent and bring total half-year sales numbers up 3.2 percent, the German trade magazine reported.

BMW declined to comment over the weekend.

"Against this backdrop we expect that we can beat the previous year's car sales in the full year," the magazine quoted Christoph Stark as saying.

The magazine also reported that BMW's plans to expand production capacity in China to 30,000 vehicles per year would be delayed for more than four years to 2010.
