I am pointing out that "they hate us for our modernity" as you express it leaves out too much.

Apart from the fact that you've misstated the argument because they don't hate us for our modernity, but in point of fact simply hate modernity, whatever its source, what is it about the formulation that leaves out too much?

Despite the fact that there are aspects of modernity which they embrace because it suits their needs, it seems to me that saying that they hate modernity is a fairly good way of looking at Islamic radicalism.
