The Taliban come to power till 1996 (not 1989 as you are stating). Whereas you, as a civilian (I assume), may not have known better, the CIA and State Department who funded and monitored the various factions must have had better insights. It does not really take much to conclude a person who uses artilary on Kabul and brings the city to its knees will not establish democracy.

Since you are calling the Pakistani government "Civilian", may I ask how it was that General Zia was replaced?

I will not even comment on Saudis being our friends...no they don't export governments, only hateful ideology.
