When my daughter lived in no. CA and had her 3 young kids and a dog, cat, etc, their dog, a golden lab mix, but huge. The dog weighed 180 lb but took care of the kids better than a nannie. He used to go out every night on "patrol" (they lived about a mile outside a small town on Hwy 99. One day the dog was nowhere to be found and the kids were told that because he was so good and loved them so much he went to have his own dog family. When the kids were in school and pre-school, my daughter and husband went looking for the dog (I've forgotten his name). They found his body in a draw about 200 yds from the house. The sheriff and animal control vet said a mountain lion had got him. They were more concerned about the mountain lion being that close to town than the dog having been killed. A few more animals, pets, chickens, etc were killed by the big cat, but animal control finally was able to tranq it with bait and removed it back to the mountains several miles away.
