often for ideological or political reasons Sure, protest and terrorism may share an ideological or political basis. I've never questioned that they have that in common. You may write novels or sell drugs for the same reason--to support your family. But that doesn't make writing novels and selling drugs the same thing. From your definition, the essence of terrorism is the unlawful use of force to coerce. Your "ideological or political reasons" appears parenthetically. You have the tail wagging the dog.
