I have no interest in stopping protest. I would hope we could find ways to limit the violence, but I would rather have protests, with the occasional violent protest, than no protests at all. In other words, if the societal cost of political protest is the occasional violent political protest, then I am willing to pay it.

I think understanding that terrorism is sometimes a political protest helps to solve the problem. IMO understanding must come before a solution, and thus contributes to options. I've never subscribed to the view that trying to understand something somehow excuses it, or makes one sympathetic, and I think understanding always furthers solutions.
