suicides typically have low self-esteem

I'm not sure suicide attacks can be analysed with suicides that stem from depression. There may be some overlap, but depression usually robs a person of the will to take the type of planning necessary for a sucessful attack.

I think they are more influenced by the hopeless hero image. Do you recall the scene of Steve McQueen holding off the Chinese army at the end of The Sand Pebbles? He out-heroed his captain who also wanted a heroic suicide ending. Such imagery is not confined to Islam or the poor or the mentally ill.
