"This is the first of the axioms of astronomy to fall."

Interesting, that's the first time I've heard of an "axiom" of astronomy. What are the others?

BTW, the reason scientists do experiments and make measurements is to clarify matters that are not clear, and to help choose between competing theories. Currently there are many unclear issues in astronomy, dark matter being an outstanding example. Whenever I see my friend, who is an amateur astronomer, he is full of enthusiasm about the latest discoveries. This field of science seems to be very healthy, largely because of advances in telescope technology I think.
