Since this is a FA thread, I will be happy to pick up this discussion with you elsewhere, after this.

There are very few rights directly stated in the constitution. I do not believe having the right to abortion should be a constitutional amendment any more than having the right to refuse medical treatment or the right to body piercing should be there. I do believe that the US constitution does imply that people are allowed maximum freedom and that unless there is overwhelming (and I mean that word in its full force) reason, the state should not regulate its citizens.

To me this principle is the rule of law. I see that someone has already pointed out other cases that show the traditional support for this principle of maximum freedom.

The belief in "life at conception" is shaky to me. I could argue that my individual cells are alive and given the right cloning lab they will turn out to be living people. Yet I shave everyday and discard a whole bunch of those cells to no one's offence (except some Islamists' :) Similarly a fetus has no chance of survival of its own in a natural environment.

Finally, "good" and "bad" acts, and therefore support for laws affecting those acts, should be judged on the basis effects they have on the society. Given the amount of child abuse one can readily find by talking to any social worker, I think there are already too many parents who should not have had kids in the first place, let alone forcing others to resent their yet unborn kids...I have noted that not a single pro-life person I know of has adopted children. Yet they all believe that good wonderful parents are just lining up to take in unwanted kids...then why do we have so many foster homes and so much child abuse?
