Vedanta Unit Losing $2 Million a Day Because of Zambian Strike
2005-07-20 09:12 (New York)

By Anthony Mukwita and Antony Sguazzin
July 20 (Bloomberg) -- Vedanta Resources Plc's Zambian unit
is losing $2 million a day because of a strike over pay that is
now in its eighth day, Augustine Seyuba, a spokesman for the unit,
said.
Workers at the unit, Konkola Copper Mines Plc, are demanding
that their pay be doubled while management has offered a 30
percent rise.
``Sadly we are losing about $2 million a day and the
implications for the economy are bad,'' Seyuba said today in a
telephone interview.
Konkola's Nkana smelter produces 150,000 metric tons of
copper a year, equal to 0.8 percent of world supply.
