re: reasons for heavy-duty baseball uniforms

Simple reasons, I think...sliding into bases at top speed could take skin off a leg, and if the pants weren't made of tough fabric, the knees would wear thru in no time. Extra padding also helps cushion the blow from those wildly pitched hardballs coming at the batter at 85-MPH.

Both kids played center field, and slamming into those outfield fences to catch balls could also inflict some damage without protection.

My kids even took the protection further and always wore another layer of long mesh shorts under their uniforms, no matter what the weather.

Both of them played soccer at fairly intense levels on local and travel teams until they had to go full-time in baseball. It seemed to me that shinguards and long heavy socks were kinda hot for the occasion, too, but necessary.

At any rate, a grass soccer field is softer than a baseball diamond. Those bases are hard and the baselines are sandy.
