One can arguably find French colonialism more "honorable", in as much as any colonialism can be so, in that France considered its colonies as extensions of herself, whereas others were only interested in material exploitation. For this reason French principles, that are very close to American ideals, were promoted across French colonies [edit: one may read Napoleon's speech in Cairo and not realise it is not from an American president]

However, just as in case of "American colonies", the clash between noble principles and material exploitation left a half baked stew of disastrous results. Although America is most often viewed as successor to British Empire, I tend to see closer ties to the French than to the British, despite the common language. There is a very deep French cultural heritage here that is masked by an English facade.
