I think the real question is "brave relative to whom?"

For example, he doesn't come close to the courage of war heroes like John McCain. But when compared to someone with far less fortitude, such as George W. Bush, he looks quite brave indeed.

After all, Bush spent an entire war hiding in the National Guard (to the extent he actually bothered to show up) and responded to 9/11 by wetting his pants in a classroom full of children and flying around the nation in a blind panic.
