Eastman Kodak Co., swinging to a second-quarter loss, said it would step up its job cuts to as many as 25,000 positions in an accelerated effort to cut costs in the face of a steeper drop-off in consumer film sales.

When was the last time you bought a friendly little yellow box of anything? Last time I was in my local photo supply store my guy announced EK had discontinued B&W paper! All the major makers of B&W paper are now operating in BK. The local art school, my Alma Mater, still insists that it's photo students learn B&W processing and printing. What remains to be seen is where they will buy their supplies by the time they graduate. I suppose there will always be some art related demand for photographic prints, but there is little to recommend using film and paper for commercial applications. The jobs I'm working on now, ARs and capabilities brochures for corporations and institutions, are what I've begun to refer to as "zero consumable" jobs, the only thing that winds up on paper aside from the final printed piece is my invoice and sometimes not even that gets printed. I love it, the days of photography creating mountains of trash (not to mention chemicals down the drain) are numbered.
