I didn't say it was meant to send a message. Making the choice sent the message automatically. One would hope that a president would understand that but with Bush, that might be asking a lot.

of course that won't stop some from believing a message was sent. I think he was handed a few choices and he liked this guy. I'm not sure even Bush knows this guys positions on controversial subjects.

Come on? This is the 21st century. He knows damn well what he stands for.........one position is very clear: he's against abortion. What he did is pick someone with a hard right stance who was not well known but has all his credentials in order............that makes for a less controversial nominee. However, the problem a conservative faces once s/he enters the Court is that they are forced to some degree to leave their ideology at the door and become more constitutional. To their supporters, that means they appear more liberal like that Souter guy you mentioned.
