I think Sadr used the violence to make a bigger name for himself and is now trying to use that as a basis to get as much political power through peaceful, or at least mostly peaceful, means as he can. I suppose its possible that if it doesn't work out as well as he expects he could try to return to violence but I think that would be a mistake on his part, even when measured in terms of his own self interest alone.

Now it might be different if you get a combination of the US leaving and the Iraqi government falling. Then you get open civil war and everyone fighting for their piece. I don't think that will happen, but I can't dismiss the possibility entirely.
