Almost 280,000 entries have been received as part of Amazon.com's online writing venture to complete a short story started by author John Updike, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Each day one entrant receives $1,000. With as many as 9,500 entries a day, Amazon's media relations director says the average submission gets about 30 seconds' review by the six employees screening the submissions. "Their eyes are sticking out like orchid stalks," she says. The contest ends Sept. 12, when Updike will write the last paragraph. GM
