How do you measure success if conventional deterrence doesn't work? Capturing and killing thousands only makes sense if it stops the organization's willingness and ability to mount further attacks.

If it only takes a handful of people to mount effective attacks and their motivation is increased rather than decreased by harsh repression of their comrades, you haven't accomplished much at the end of the day.

The US is not in a position to use massive force against a geographically contained uprising like the cases you cited in another post. We have an asymmetrical disadvantage being a very large target in many places, vulnerable to small strikes by small groups.

It's like dealing with cockroaches in your kitchen by inviting ten people over to stomp on every bug they see. It doesn't affect the bugs breeding in the walls that you don't see and can't reach.

We know that Al Qaeda still has thousands of active followers despite our eliminating so many, and the motivation of the current fighters and leadership hasn't changed. You are disagreeing with a known result to a tested policy.
