I think shorthand sometimes shortchanges. Would you agree that much of the nuance of a thing is lost when people communicate in shorthand? Further, because people's "shorthand" may be quite different, since the meaning attached to the word may vary person to person (just look at how the word "brave" is interpreted by people here), there may be huge differences in meaning between various receivers of the shorthand.
