You keep substitution lying for perjury.

from FindLaw:
Perjury
Perjury statutes in many states make it a crime to knowingly lie after taking an oath to tell the truth, such as when testifying in court or communicating through certain legal documents. The falsehood must usually be material to the matter at issue, though perjury can also be committed by simply signing a document with the knowledge that it contains false assertions.

In an early post you argued that Karl Rove should be held to the highest standards. I and many if not most people who cherish personal responsibility believe that the President must be held to the highest standard. If the Chief of Police perjured should he be disqualified from serve as chief? Lawyers feel that perjury disqualifies one from serving.

Here is what you said restated more accurately:

"I agree that Clinton deserved to be disbarred for his crime. But, the sentance and punishment metted out for a crime is proportional to the crime committed in our society. Lying is not grounds for impeachment. Hell, every President in the modern era has perjured about something or other, history usually reveals their perjury in memoirs and other sources. Should Clinton have been impeached for getting caught perjuring?

I don't think impeachment was an appropriate punishment in that case. He perjured about a personal matter. If he had perjured and put the nation at risk, then perhaps impeachment would be appropriate."

Now the rebuttal. Clinton was the first President to be compelled to testify in a court case. No other President has had the opportunity to perjure. No other President has perjured about anything or other. Their memoirs have never revealed perjury.

"Clinton have been impeached for getting caught perjuring? "

He should have been removed from office.

"He perjured about a personal matter."

If you murder your neighbor because he has green eyes or because he killed you cat, it is the same crime. Sentencing guideline don't make exceptions for murdering for personal reasons.

Perjury undermines everything that the legal system stand for.

"If he had perjured and put the nation at risk, then perhaps impeachment would be appropriate."

Destroying the legal system is not serious? Maybe it doesn't work very well, but destroying it for personal gain is not an admirable thing.
