Folks sympathetic to Rove would have us believe that he was a) merely trying to fully prevent reporters from going down the wrong path or b) actually getting his information from reporters, then using the information to steer other reporters away from mistakes.

Neither of those charitable explanations would pass a Roveian smell test if it were offered by one his client's opponents. And no one should believe in any way that his role in this is noble or benign. It is not. His motive was clear: help Bush by discrediting Wilson. We are merely arguing over whether that "help" was a crime.
