Mike ~ I may not be a worthy ally or debater because of my limited knowledge in these matters. OTOH, since by definit-ion an ion is a charged atom, your 'naked ion' must be in some Latin sense. [vbg] Maybe it's the few remaining neurons rattling in my clustered brain (grey matter) that you hear in my attempts to visualize these atomic matters.

Is it like the crystal bonds where (instead of chemical or electrostatic bonding) the cohesion is the result of electron spins in parallel (attraction) or antiparallel (avoidance) wherein the electrons start to form a cloud? If it's like crystal bonding, then are we talking about a perfect crystal with no impurities? Are we discussing breaking crystal bonds in order to refine/ Can our C120 buckyballs be considered a hollow crystal with a geodesic lattice structure and few dislocations (well, maybe a door so we can shove some strange stuff in there to tote around [g])?

Is Hudson's description of superconductor attributes as that of the speed of sound (i.e. vibrations through crystal-like forms) making any more sense in this context?

So many questions....

Regards,
