All I see is that today, everything costs us more than it did yesterday -- the cost of both goods and money went up today and will do nothing but go up for a long time to come -- is that called inflation?

Then you are not looking very close.
Even IF I accept what you said and for the sake of argument I will say I do: what is happening and has happened is not where the money is, we are debating what is about to happen when housing plunges.
