Well once I had all five numbers needed to win the lottery, I just happened to have them for the wrong day. In speculation and investments, timing is everything.

Consider your investments in the oil and oil services sector, you chose to speculate during a cyclical bull within a much larger bear market. I can give you several very rational arguments that oil and other commodity prices are suffering from the same irrational price movements as RE. Meanwhile I made money in both oil related issues and RE because I never attempt to tell the market what it should be doing. I have no way of knowing what the market should be doing and neither does anyone else. The market only discovers the truth in the long run, in the meantime it goes all over Hell and back.

having retired from respectable employment in my early 30s

You mean you chose a different type of work. If you manage your investments you still work, right? It would be odd indeed if you did choose actual retirement over work while still in your 30s, but then many trust fund hippies have been induced into a purposeless life with far smaller sums. Plenty of people with far more money choose to work well into their 70s and 80s (Bill Gates, Warren Buffet). To me, work is far more interesting and satisfying than money will ever be. In other words, there isn't enough money in the world to get me to quit working.
