In that vein, about the subjugation of women:

Last year, I sold my house. I lived in a very nice city near a huge Intel facility. At least 25% of the neighborhood was employed at Intel and the neighborhood reflected the diversity of the company's workforce. On my street and the next, there were three Muslim families that I knew of. Two were pretty secular in appearance and outlook and one was quite traditional and very reserved.

My friends across the street lived behind the more traditional family. The husband beat his wife with some degree of regularity, usually late at night. Her screams would frighten my friends' child (and my friends themselves). They called the police numerous times but each time the wife denied everything and nothing came of it.

After hearing about this problem for the umpteenth time, I started to think how close my house was to the one behind me and how I would feel if that were happening there. So, I sold my house to my friends and moved to where there is no one that close. The new owner of my friend's old house has a problem keeping tenants. I can guess why.

BTW, the husbands in the more secular families work at Intel. The traditional husband is some big-wig at the local mosque about a half-mile away. Go figure.
