Exactly. Having had the integrated TiVo experience, I really don't want to do without it.

I think the big problem for TiVo is that DVR market penetration is still so small that most people haven't had the TiVo experience. Such people will probably be very happy with any DVR, since they won't have anything with which to compare it.

If DirecTV offers a cheaper alternative, they'll get a lot of people to bite. They can continue to support existing DirecTiVo customers while not creating new ones, and have the best of both worlds.

Or they could be really smart and realize that TiVo rules, and that by offering it they are creating a truly compelling service combination that creates extremely loyal customers. But I don't think that's going to happen. I think that instead they will most probably be short-sighted and unconcerned with esthetics, and will ruin things for those of us who love TiVo.
