I think that if Americans in general are alarmed by Islamic terrorism and don't just add its existence to the obstacles we already encounter in daily life, there may be more of an effort to look clearly and try to resolve this somehow at a political level.

For example, becoming alarmed may motivate more people to become politically active in general. I think that is a good thing.

I am alarmed in the sense that I think it is important to discuss this in depth. I am alarmed at the thought that many people might die, just as it alarms me when children starve to death. I am alarmed about many things. That does not mean that I cannot enjoy my life--I do so immensely. When I go off to bed and cuddle the dogs and read my book in a little while I will not toss around sleeplessly and disturbed or anything. I will get up tomorrow morning and go buy several pounds of organic cherries at the farmers' market, and at the concert in the forest I will relax and enjoy the piney smells. I think that terrorism afoot in the civilized world may make me enjoy these things even more, as does everything that reminds me of the fragility of life. If I were in London, I might rent a bicycle or hail taxis rather than take the underground, though.
