I found some polling data from the 2004 election but it doesn't tell you much since the election was so close. I wouldn't attribute lasting significance to any difference below 55-45 in one election, especially that one.

If the intent of the exercise is for one group to say that their ideological opponents are dumb - as one poster did in his (literally) last post here - that's out of bounds. It doesn't get us anywhere.

I'm sure some good books have been written about the American electorate's preferences - probably many. We'll uncover a few eventually.
