One reason that the Bible (and the Roman church) came out so strongly against paganism was to hide its pagan roots. The myth of the dying/resurrecting godman is a central theme of all of the great pagan mystery religions around the Mediterranean. This universal myth was blended with the Jewish concept of the Messiah to create the Jesus myth.
