So cross your fingers and hope for the best? 60 years ago only US had nukes and they had to be airlifted to the target. Even excluding US and Russia, show me what countries cannot be reached by a nuclear missile today. So long as the cold war was on, smaller countries could hope that their alliance with one of the super powers would deter usage of nuclear weapons against them. Can such a thing be said now? Do you think Pakistanis can give up their nukes and rest easy believing that if India attacked them US would nuke India in retaliation?

As with stock market, past performance is not a predictor of future returns. In fact, doggedly doing the same thing over a long period of time is the sure path to eventual failure.
