People get what they want, within the laws that benefit society in almost all cases. There is huge safety regulation in the auto industry that adds many $'s to the cost of each vehicle. Would people have paid extra for these safety features if they weren't regulated? I doubt it.

More efficient cars will reduce out dependence of oil imports with all that means to the trade deficit and our political situation. It will return discretionary dollars into the economy instead of "going up in smoke". Efficiency is a win-win-win for society. And the marketplace will figure a way to give people what they want in efficient vehicles. Just as people still get what they want with all the safety regulation over the last 30 years.

I never remember anyone saying "I bought this car because it gets lousy mileage".
