Central Intelligence Agency analyst Michael Scheuer is quoted as saying that the head of Italy's SISMI military secret service authorized the adduction of Abu Omar. Last week, unnamed CIA sources also told CNN's David Ensor that the CIA had briefed and sought approval from its Italian counterpart for the operation.
