I've read some reports like that, but they don't hold up to close scrutiny. There is just too much hand waving there. For example, they pick on the Roman Mithraists who tended to be secretive in their rituals, but completely ignore the Persian and Indian branches of the religion that were not so and have survived to this day. This is like saying we can tell nothing about Christianity if Catholicism went extinct but Protestants were still around. Yes there are differences between the two sects, but they are more similar than not. There is also very little appeal to reason and analysis in these rebuffs. I mean let's face it here, you have the high priest of Mithra sitting at the head of the council deciding what is or is not Christianity. The guy still prints "SOLI INVICTO COMITI" on his coins and he is regarded as the founder of Christian church. If I had pointed these things out about say Islam, you would have no objections concluding that it was a refined pagan religion. But hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion...so peace.
