"There is nothing centrist about Senator Clinton's liberal record," Ms. Schmitt said in a statement.

The Democrats' gathering, at a hotel ballroom, gave the potential presidential candidates an opportunity to showcase their skills before a group that still wields considerable influence in the party, though less than it did when Mr. Clinton was president.

Mrs. Clinton seemed to stir the greatest enthusiasm with a 30-minute speech that covered a broad variety of topics, including foreign policy, domestic security, health care and education.
