I have just read a very interesting book by Gould: "Full House". He argues persuasively that evolution is not about "progress" but about survival and variety. Remember all those artificial divides (the Age of Reptiles...etc.)? Well, he demonstrates that bacteria, fish, etc. did not lose any reality by our ignorance (or ignoring) of them. He shows that bacteria and (surprise) ANTELOPES are far more successful and progressive than humans. Humans (and horses, as well) are at a dead end. We are a twig on the tree of evolution. Because of variety and adaptability, bacteria may be expected to survive us. They are ancient and they are successful.

We have all our eggs in one basket.
