Agreed Bob however, IF you are going to allow "freebie" members to post, they should be somewhat accountable for the content and accuracy of the shots they are firing.

No more so than paying members. Purchase of a subscription doesn't and isn't intended to remove responsibility for one's own behavior. All it does is add features and remove ads.

I am personally very unhappy to hear that SI is even allowing freebie memberships. The main reason I PAID to be a member back in the 90's was to relieve myself from the garbage that occurs on free sites. Now apparently, someone can "sign-up" while having coffee at starbucks and start spouting off before the foam is gone.

The pay-to-post model is one of the biggest reason we were able to acquire the site. We bought it on its deathbed and pay-to-post was a big part of what put it there. It was fine when SI was the only game in town. It no longer is.

The "garbage" you cite is very largely mitigated by the restrictions placed on free member posting activity. They can post very few times per day (keeping spam at bay) and only on market-related topics.

The draw of SI was the sharing of good information and allowing board moderators to remove any crap as it happens.

Depends on how one defines "crap". IMO, the overall quality of the site has improved dramatically since allowing free, limited posting. Free members get only so many posts per day, so they're not inclined to use them frivolously. And the signal/noise (stocks/politics) ratio has been steadily improving. We bought a political discussion forum and are successfully recreating it as a market discussion forum.
